About Me:
I am a graduate student in the Educational Technology Department here at San Diego State University. I was an entomologist for several years before I went into teaching. As an undergraduate, I studied biology, and got really interested in entomology in grad school. I ended up studying blackflies in Bill Walton's lab, and still have a deep respect for the ubiquitous fly!
My first teaching job was in South Central Los Angeles, and I was so excited to be there. I remember my interview to this day. The principal asked me just a couple of questions, and then offered me the job on the spot! I couldn't believe it. That job probably was the hardest and most rewarding job I have ever had. I loved my students, and I think they loved my class, even though I was just learning how to teach. Since then, I have moved from middle to high school and become increasingly interested in what technology could do for my students' learning.
Random stuff about me: Born in Los Angeles, my dad is Colombian and I have traveled there quite a bit over the last five years. My favorite Colombian city is Cartagena. Bogota is great, it's got a hip and kind of intellectual vibe to it. Villa de Leyva and Tayrona are both amazing. This website has lots of information on Colombia if you are interested.
I have one child, he is in the military. I am currently working on an exhibit of his photos he took when he was stationed in Kirkuk.
I live in the small San Diego community of Redwood Village, which is very close to College Grove. We are active in the community council and really like the neighborhood we're in.
I also wanted to write a little about another thing that is very important to me. Yes, I'm a vegan. Don't leave!! Read on...I won't preach...much.
Here is a link to the Environmental News Network ENN.COM. Concern for the environment was one of the reasons I went vegan. What we do to animals is also reflected in what is happening on the planet. This is a report put out by, what would probably pass as an unbiased source, the United Nations, released in 2006 Livestock's Long Shadow. Also a huge issue is also not just what I eat, but what we feed our two dogs. Yes, they are vegan too. And they are very healthy and cute as hell. Check this out for info on vegan dogs.
